📰 FSP complains of irregularities in a Guinness World Record event held in Sri Lanka📄 The Jana Aragala Sandhanaya yesterday lodged a complaint with the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), calling for an investigation into Deputy Minister Sundaralingam Pradeep over alleged irregularities related to a Guinness World Record event held in Sri Lanka. The organisation alleged that state patronage had been extended to a private company for the event and that large sums of money had been collected from around 5,000 families of participating students. Speaking to the media, after submitting the complaint, Jana Aragala Sandhanaya National Executive Council member and Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) Secretary, Duminda Nagamuwa, alleged that the government had promoted the Bharatanatyam workshop, held on June 14, as an event that secured a Guinness World Record for the participation of the largest number of students. He said a government politician had taken the lead in organising the event, attended by Deputy Minister Mahinda Jayasinghe. Nagamuwa questioned the decision to provide state support for an event organised by a private entity, claiming that the Guinness certificate issued for the achievement had been awarded not to Sri Lanka or a state institution, but to a company.📅 27 June 2026🔗 Source: island.lk#️⃣ #SriLankar #SriLanka #Sri_Lanka #SriLankaNews #NewsSriLanka #ШриЛанка #Шри_Ланка #НовостиШриЛанки #ШриЛанкаНовости

📰 Heartbreak for Scotland as Sri Lanka clinch thriller to stay alive📄 Sri Lanka kept alive their slim hopes of making it to the semi-finals of the 2026 T20 World Cup with a nervy win over Scotland in Manchester. Chasing 152, they found themselves needing seven from the final over. Nilakshika Silva and Sugandika Kumari took four off the first three balls of Rachel Slater before the seamer hobbled off with what looked like a knee issue. Priyanaz Chatterji came on to bowl the remaining three balls. She conceded a single off the fourth delivery but with two needed from two, Sugandika slashed through short third for four to seal the win. 📰 Law Association for Asia & Pacific Sounds Alarm Over Proposed Changes to Sri Lankan Judicial Retirement Age📄 LAWASIA, the Law Association for Asia and the Pacific, has officially voiced grave concerns over the Sri Lankan government’s proposed constitutional amendment aimed at extending the retirement age of Supreme Court and Court of Appeal judges . In a formal statement released on June 26, 2026, the regional legal body warned that the ad hoc initiative risks severely undermining public confidence and compromising the independence of the judiciary. The statement from LAWASIA strongly aligns with objections previously raised by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) . In a letter addressed to the President of Sri Lanka on May 25, 2026, the BASL stressed that changing the retirement age of sitting judges at this juncture would likely be seen as a “blatant attempt to interfere with the judiciary” . LAWASIA reiterated that for democracy to function, the judiciary must not only be independent in reality but must also be entirely free from the perception of political influence, accommodation, or impropriety. The organization also noted that it is endorsing similar concerns raised by another major international body, the Commonwealth Lawyers Association. Currently, the retirement age for senior judges in Sri Lanka is fixed under Article 107(5) of the Constitution.📅 27 June 2026🔗 Source: lankabusinessonline.com#️⃣ #SriLankar #SriLanka #Sri_Lanka #SriLankaNews #NewsSriLanka #ШриЛанка #Шри_Ланка #НовостиШриЛанки #ШриЛанкаНовости

📰 Manageable Impact on Sri Lankan Lenders’ Capital from Higher Gold-Loan Risk Weights: Fitch Ratings📄 Fitch Ratings believes the Central Bank of Sri Lanka’s tighter capital treatment for gold-backed lending will have a mostly manageable impact on rated banks’ and finance companies’ capital ratios, while supporting risk profiles. The impact on Fitch-rated finance companies is likely to be larger than on banks because gold-backed lending accounts for a larger share of their loan books and underwriting has been more aggressive. Banks and finance companies will adopt similar risk weightings under the new directive. Gold loans with loan-to-value (LTV) ratios below 70% will carry a 10% risk weight for both sectors, up from zero. For exposures in the 70%-100% LTV band, banks will apply 40% risk weight, up from 20%, while finance companies will also apply 40% to the full exposure, instead of 100% only on the portion above 70% LTV. Exposures above 100% LTV will remain risk weighted at 100% for both. This raises average risk density in gold-backed lending portfolios to about 12% for Fitch-rated banks and 26% for finance companies, from 1% and 5%, respectively. We expect only a modest effect on banks’ capital ratios due to their lower gold-loan exposures.📅 15 June 2026🔗 Source: lankabusinessonline.com#️⃣ #SriLankar #SriLanka #Sri_Lanka #SriLankaNews #NewsSriLanka #ШриЛанка #Шри_Ланка #НовостиШриЛанки #ШриЛанкаНовости

📰 Govt. eyes multi-billion dollar green hydrogen future📄 The government has launched an ambitious drive to attract global investment into green hydrogen and green ammonia production, a move expected to reshape the country’s energy landscape, generate billions of dollars in foreign direct investment and establish the island as a strategic clean energy hub in the Indian Ocean. In a significant development, the Government has extended the deadline for investors to submit Expressions of Interest under its Request for Information (RFI) process until June 19, 2026, reflecting growing international interest in Sri Lanka’s emerging green energy sector. The initiative, spearheaded through the Board of Investment (BOI), in collaboration with key energy sector institutions, covers large-scale green hydrogen and ammonia production facilities, export terminals, storage infrastructure and the manufacture of hydrogen-related equipment. Senior Government officials said the programme is closely aligned with Sri Lanka’s long-term economic transformation agenda and global commitments to low-carbon development. “The world is undergoing a historic energy transition. Countries that position themselves early in the green hydrogen value chain will become major beneficiaries of future energy trade. Sri Lanka possesses exceptional renewable energy resources and a strategic maritime location that provides a strong foundation for such investments,” an energy sector official said.📅 15 June 2026🔗 Source: island.lk#️⃣ #SriLankar #SriLanka #Sri_Lanka #SriLankaNews #NewsSriLanka #ШриЛанка #Шри_Ланка #НовостиШриЛанки #ШриЛанкаНовости

📰 Ranil warns of another economic crisis, calls for Opposition unity📄 Former President and UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has warned that Sri Lanka is heading towards a severe economic crisis, alleging that the current administration is steering the country towards “total collapse.” Addressing a meeting of the UNP Working Committee at the party headquarters on Flower Road on Thursday, Wickremesinghe claimed that the government was facing mounting difficulties on multiple fronts, with the economy continuing to deteriorate. He also accused the administration of pursuing policies that, he said, marginalised war heroes and Buddhist monks. Wickremesinghe expressed concern over what he described as an erosion of fundamental and legal rights, citing the arrest and alleged ill-treatment of former State Intelligence Service Chief Suresh Sallay as an example. He said the rising cost of living had emerged as one of the main concerns of the public. Commenting on the political situation, the former President said the Opposition had not been able to forge unity among the anti-government forces and called for greater coordination among Opposition parties and groups. He advocated a phased mobilisation strategy, beginning at village and electorate level, instead of attempting to address all issues simultaneously.📅 15 June 2026🔗 Source: island.lk#️⃣ #SriLankar #SriLanka #Sri_Lanka #SriLankaNews #NewsSriLanka #ШриЛанка #Шри_Ланка #НовостиШриЛанки #ШриЛанкаНовости
